The MUNCH museum opened in October 2021 in a striking 13-story tower that leans toward the Oslo Fjord. Spanish architect Juan Herreros designed the building, which provides 26,313 square meters of exhibition space dedicated primarily to Edvard Munch. The artist bequeathed his entire estate to the city of Oslo upon his death in 1944, creating one of the world's largest single-artist collections with nearly 27,000 works including paintings, prints, drawings, and photographs.
Multiple versions of The Scream anchor the collection, though the famous 1893 tempera painting rotates display to protect its fragile cardboard support. Munch's other iconic images appear throughout: Madonna, Anxiety, and Despair trace his exploration of existential themes. The building houses 11 galleries showing different aspects of Munch's work alongside temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. A rooftop bar offers panoramic views over the city and fjord.
