The Villa Colloredo Mels Museum in Recanati, in the Marche region, houses a civic art collection centered on the work of Lorenzo Lotto, who painted several altarpieces for churches in and around the town during the 16th century.
Lotto's Annunciation (c. 1534), with its startled Virgin and fleeing cat, is the museum's most celebrated painting and one of the most distinctive treatments of the subject in Renaissance art. Other works from local churches complete a portrait of artistic life in a small Italian hill town. Recanati is also the birthplace of the poet Giacomo Leopardi.
