German artist Adolph Menzel painted this vibrant scene of a Parisian theater interior during a performance, capturing the gaslit atmosphere and crowded audience. The stage blazes with light while spectators in evening dress fill the boxes and stalls. Menzel renders the scene with his characteristic precision, every face and costume distinct.
Menzel visited Paris several times, documenting its cultural life with an outsider's fascination. The Théâtre du Gymnase specialized in comedies and vaudevilles popular with the bourgeoisie. This work anticipates Impressionist treatments of modern entertainment by Degas and Renoir. The painting belongs to the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
