Albrecht Dürer depicted Roman soldiers gathered at the foot of Christ's cross in this devotional work. The armored figures cast lots for Christ's garments, a traditional element of Crucifixion imagery. Dürer's precise draftsmanship renders every detail of their military equipment with characteristic accuracy.
Dürer created many religious works throughout his career, combining Northern precision with Italian influences. The soldiers' presence adds dramatic tension to the sacred scene. This work is held at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.
