Berthe Morisot captures an intimate domestic moment in On the Sofa, showing a woman relaxing in a private interior. The loose brushwork and soft palette exemplify her distinctive approach to Impressionism.
Morisot was the only woman among the founding Impressionists, exhibiting in seven of their eight shows. Her subjects focused on domestic life and female experience, areas she knew intimately as a bourgeois woman. This painting hangs at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
