by Camille Pissarro, 1897
French artist Camille Pissarro painted this 1897 nighttime view of Boulevard Montmartre from his hotel window. Gas lamps and carriage lights illuminate the wet pavement while the bustle of Parisian nightlife continues below. The painting measures 53.3 × 64.8 cm in oil on canvas.
Pissarro created a series of boulevard views in different weather and light conditions. This nocturnal scene shows his late mastery of color and atmosphere. The work hangs at the National Gallery in London.
