Adriaen Brouwer captured peasant life with unflinching honesty in this tavern scene of men smoking clay pipes. The figures huddle in a dim interior, their faces illuminated by subtle light as wisps of tobacco smoke curl through the air. Brouwer's loose, confident brushwork brings energy to these humble subjects.
Working during the Dutch Golden Age, Brouwer specialized in low-life genre scenes that influenced later artists including Adriaen van Ostade. Despite his short life (he died at around 32), his work was collected by both Rubens and Rembrandt. This painting hangs at the Louvre in Paris.
