Where to See Cup of Water and a Rose on a Silver Plate

Spanish artist Francisco de Zurbarán painted this austere still life of a cup of water and rose on a silver plate. The Spanish Baroque master's bodegones (still lifes) show objects with almost mystical intensity.

Zurbarán's stark lighting creates dramatic presence from simple things. This painting hangs at the National Gallery in London.

Zurbarán's still lifes are prized for their austere beauty and spiritual quality. A cup, water, and rose become contemplative objects, painted with the same reverence he brought to religious subjects.
