Gabriel Metsu depicted an armorer at work in this finely detailed genre scene from the Dutch Golden Age. The craftsman examines or polishes a piece of armor, surrounded by the tools and products of his trade. Metsu's careful rendering of metal surfaces, fabrics, and textures demonstrates his mastery of illusionistic painting.
Metsu was known for elegant genre scenes and portraits that rivaled Vermeer's in their refined technique and quiet domestic atmosphere. His paintings of craftsmen at work celebrated Dutch prosperity and skilled trades. The armorer's profession, while still active in the 17th century, already carried nostalgic associations with medieval chivalry. This painting now hangs at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the premier museum for Dutch Golden Age art.
