by Giorgione
Italian artist Giorgione painted this portrait of a young woman known as Laura, one of his most celebrated works. She wears a fur-lined garment partially revealing her breast, creating an image both intimate and idealized.
The laurel leaves behind her may be a visual pun on her name. Giorgione's soft sfumato technique and poetic atmosphere influenced the entire Venetian Renaissance. This painting hangs at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
