by Giorgione, 1508
Giorgione portrays a young man, traditionally identified as Antonio Broccardo, with the mysterious atmosphere that characterizes his few surviving works. The sitter's pensive gaze and shadowed features create an mysterious presence.
Giorgione died young, leaving perhaps only five certain paintings. Yet his poetic approach transformed Venetian Renaissance painting, influencing Titian and later artists. This 1508 portrait hangs at the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts.
