The Budapest Museum of Fine Arts stands in Heroes' Square, housing Hungary's finest collection of international art. Emperor Franz Joseph I inaugurated the museum on December 1, 1906, though its foundation dates to 1871 when Hungary purchased the Esterházy collection. This aristocratic family had assembled 637 paintings, 3,500 drawings, and 51,000 prints over generations. The Louvre and other major institutions bid for the collection, but Hungarian patriots rallied to keep it. These works, including paintings by Raphael, Rembrandt, and Goya, became the museum's core.
The eclectic-neoclassical building, designed by Albert Schickedanz, provides a grand setting for over 100,000 objects spanning Egyptian antiquities to 19th-century French painting. Velázquez's early work The Lunch, Manet's portrait of Baudelaire's mistress, and Giorgione's mysterious portrait attract scholars. The Spanish collection ranks among the best outside Spain. After extensive renovation, the museum reopened in 2018 with expanded galleries. The Egyptian collection is Central Europe's second largest, and the Old Masters' Gallery surveys European painting from the 13th through 18th centuries.
