by Giovanni Battista Moroni, 1565
Giovanni Battista Moroni painted this remarkably direct portrait of a tailor at work around 1565, scissors in hand as he prepares to cut pale fabric. The craftsman looks up from his task with an alert, slightly questioning expression that engages viewers immediately. His simple russet doublet contrasts with the fine materials he shapes for wealthy clients who commission his work.
This painting broke with convention by portraying a working artisan with the dignity usually reserved for nobility. The tailor's gaze engages viewers directly, asserting his humanity and professional skill. Moroni worked primarily for the merchant class of Bergamo, bringing Renaissance naturalism to middle-class subjects who previously received little attention from painters. The painting hangs at the National Gallery in London, where it remains among their most admired and popular works.
