by Ilya Repin
Ilya Repin completed this portrait of his brother Vasily (V.E. Repin) in 1867, early in his artistic career. Vasily was a musician, and Repin would paint him again in 1876 in a second portrait now also at the Tretyakov Gallery. Both works demonstrate Repin's mastery of Realism.
Repin's sisters Zoé, Zélie, and Juliette were his first models. After moving to Paris, he frequently returned home to Ornans to find inspiration among family and familiar faces. This painting measures 86 x 68 cm and captures the intimate bond between the brothers. Repin would become one of the most renowned Russian artists of the nineteenth century.
