Vasily Surikov completed this view of an isba, a traditional Russian wooden house. The humble dwelling sits in a winter landscape, its log construction and snow-covered roof evoking rural Siberian life. Surikov grew up in such surroundings and returned to paint them throughout his career.
While known for large historical canvases, Surikov also documented Russian vernacular architecture with deep personal attachment. The muted winter palette captures the harsh beauty of his homeland. This painting hangs at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
