by Jan Steen
Jan Steen painted a young woman eating oysters, a scene with subtle erotic undertones. In Dutch Golden Age art, oysters were considered aphrodisiacs. Steen often included such playful suggestions.
His genre scenes capture Dutch daily life with wit and observation. This painting hangs at the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
