Johannes Vermeer painted A Young Woman Seated at the Virginals, another of his musical scenes showing a woman at a keyboard instrument. Vermeer returned to this subject repeatedly, finding in it opportunities to explore light, color, and domestic refinement.
The virginal scenes belong to Vermeer's mature period and demonstrate his mastery of atmosphere. Each version offers subtle variations in composition, lighting, and the symbolic paintings visible in the background.
