John Singer Sargent completed this early work showing oyster gatherers on a Brittany beach. The composition captures brilliant sunlight on wet sand and working figures with the bravura brushwork that would make Sargent famous.
Painted when Sargent was only twenty-two, this work already displays his mastery of light and atmosphere. It hangs at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
