John Singer Sargent executed this portrait of Charles Deering, the American industrialist and art collector. The composition captures the sitter's confident presence with the fluid brushwork that made Sargent the most sought-after portraitist of his era.
Sargent painted leading figures of American and European society. His ability to suggest personality through pose and handling distinguished his portraits from those of his contemporaries. It hangs at the RISD Museum in Providence.
