Women walking in a garden

Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai created this Women Walking in a Garden in 1798 in the traditional Ukiyo-e style. The scene shows elegantly dressed women strolling through a serene garden setting, some crossing a modest bridge while others converse. A thatched cottage and winding stream complete the tranquil composition.

Hokusai renders the lush vegetation with careful attention to detail, capturing the ephemeral beauty of daily life that defines Ukiyo-e art. The distinctive use of line and balanced composition reflects his mastery of the form. The painting now resides at the Guimet Museum in Paris.
