by Katsushika Hokusai, 1831
Red Fuji (Fine Wind, Clear Morning) shows Mount Fuji glowing red-brown in early morning light, its slopes catching the sun while the sky transitions from blue to white. Created around 1831 by Katsushika Hokusai, this print rivals The Great Wave as the most celebrated image in the "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" series.
The effect occurs briefly on certain autumn mornings when atmospheric conditions paint the mountain in unexpected colors. Hokusai stripped the composition to essentials: mountain, sky, and tiny trees at the base establishing scale. The simplicity is deceptive, requiring precise color gradation across the sky and careful registration of the blocks. Early impressions show deeper blue and richer red than later printings.
Impressions exist in museums worldwide, with quality varying based on when in the edition they were printed.
Luxury wall art with the same mood and energy. Gallery-quality canvas, no museum crowds.
