by Anders Zorn, 1897
Anders Zorn completed this celebration of Swedish folk culture in 1897, capturing a Midsummer's Eve dance in his hometown of Mora. Couples whirl in the pale light of the Nordic summer night, the maypole silhouetted against the sky. Zorn had just donated a new maypole to the village and felt obligated to attend and lead the dressing ceremony each year.
In his autobiographical notes, Zorn described painting this work in June and July "after sunset," capturing the magical light that never quite fades during Swedish midsummer. The dancing figures seem to spin with genuine energy, their movement conveyed through loose, confident brushstrokes.
Zorn trained at the Royal Swedish Academy and remained devoted to his homeland throughout his international career. He painted Swedish peasants, landscapes, and folk traditions alongside portraits of American presidents and European aristocrats. This painting is considered a national treasure, displayed at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, and it rarely leaves Sweden.
Luxury wall art with the same mood and energy. Gallery-quality canvas, no museum crowds.
