by Atkinson Grimshaw, 1874
Working in oil on board, John Atkinson Grimshaw painted this nocturnal scene showing a country lane bathed in moonlight. Bare trees silhouette against the luminous sky while pools of light reflect on the wet road. The composition captures the atmospheric effects that made Grimshaw famous.
Grimshaw specialized in moonlit scenes, developing techniques to capture the subtle interplay of natural and artificial light. James McNeill Whistler, upon visiting his studio, remarked: "I considered myself the inventor of nocturnes until I saw Grimmy's moonlit pictures." Grimshaw's night scenes remain highly sought by collectors today.
