Paolo Veronese produced this portrait around 1546-1548, depicting a woman in elegant black and white with gold accents, holding a small child while a white dog stands at her feet. The composition creates a visual and emotional connection between the three figures. Warm light from the left illuminates their features against a dark background with hints of blue sky.
Veronese was one of the "great trio" of Venetian cinquecento painters alongside Titian and Tintoretto. Known as a supreme colorist, he developed a naturalist style famous for elaborate narrative cycles, majestic architectural settings, and glittering pageantry. This intimate family scene measures 115 x 95 cm and is now at the Louvre in Paris.
