by Egon Schiele, 1917
Egon Schiele created this striking work in 1917, depicting a woman in a twisted pose with one knee drawn up. The figure wears a colorful patterned dress rendered in gouache and watercolor, her face turned with an introspective expression. Schiele's characteristic angular lines and psychological intensity are fully present.
This late work shows Schiele's Expressionist approach to the human figure, distorting anatomy to convey emotional states. The 46 × 30.5 cm work demonstrates his mastery of mixed media on paper. Now at the National Gallery Prague.
Representative of Schiele's raw, psychologically intense approach to the human form.
