French painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted this Portrait of Monsieur M. in 1850, an early work that demonstrates his academic training and skill in portraiture. The painting depicts a man with dark hair in a seated position, rendered with the technical precision that would characterize Bouguereau's entire career. He was approximately 25 years old when he created this work.
Bouguereau (1825-1905) became one of the most successful French academic painters of his era. His mastery of the human form and classical subjects earned him enormous popularity during his lifetime, though his reputation declined with the rise of Impressionism and modern art. Recent decades have seen renewed appreciation for his technical accomplishment.
The painting measures 87 x 80.5 cm and is held at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California. While Bouguereau is best known for his idealized figures from mythology and his paintings of peasant children, this portrait shows his capacity for straightforward realistic portraiture in the academic tradition.
