David Hockney
British
b. 1937
David Hockney (born 1937) is a British painter, draftsman, and photographer widely considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Born in Bradford, England, he studied at the Royal College of Art in London before moving to Los Angeles in the 1960s, where the California light and swimming pool culture transformed his work.
Hockney's swimming pool paintings, including A Bigger Splash (1967) and Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), became icons of modern art. The latter sold for $90.3 million at auction in 2018. In his eighties, he turned to iPad painting, creating vibrant Yorkshire landscapes with the same restless curiosity that's defined his six-decade career. Our collection includes works displayed at major institutions worldwide.
