The Brancacci Chapel in Florence's Church of Santa Maria del Carmine contains frescoes that changed the course of Western art. Masaccio and Masolino began painting the Life of Saint Peter cycle in 1424, commissioned by silk merchant Felice Brancacci.
Masaccio's contribution, completed before his death at 26 in 1428, introduced a naturalism that broke decisively with Gothic painting. The Tribute Money and The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden became touchstones for generations of Renaissance artists, from Botticelli to Michelangelo. The cycle was left unfinished until Filippino Lippi completed the remaining scenes around 1481-1485, over fifty years after Masaccio's panels.
