The Cooper Hewitt is the Smithsonian's design museum, the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to historical and contemporary design. Founded in 1897 by the Hewitt sisters (granddaughters of industrialist Peter Cooper), it moved to Andrew Carnegie's former mansion on Fifth Avenue in 1976. The collection holds over 210,000 objects spanning 30 centuries of design, from textiles and wallpapers to digital interaction.
The museum's drawing collection includes landscape studies by Frederic Edwin Church, the Hudson River School painter known for dramatic South American and North American landscapes. Church's Cotopaxi seen from Ambato and his Maine studies demonstrate the detailed field sketching that made his finished paintings so geologically accurate. The Carnegie Mansion itself is a landmark worth visiting, with its original wood paneling and garden.
