Frederic Edwin Church painted A Waterfall in Colombia in 1853, capturing the dramatic landscapes he encountered during his South American travels. The work uses oil paint on paperboard to render cascading water amid lush tropical vegetation.
Church was a central figure in the Hudson River School, known for realistic detail, dramatic light, and panoramic views. His South American expeditions, inspired partly by Alexander von Humboldt's writings, produced some of his most celebrated works.
It hangs at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
