American artist Frederic Edwin Church painted this view of the Cotopaxi volcano as seen from Ambato, Ecuador. Church traveled throughout South America documenting dramatic landscapes. The volcano was a favorite subject he painted multiple times.
As a leading Hudson River School painter, Church created panoramic views of natural wonders. This work is held at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York.
