The Corcoran Gallery of Art opened in Washington, D.C. in 1869, founded by banker and philanthropist William Wilson Corcoran as the city's first purpose-built art museum. It grew into one of the largest privately funded galleries in the country before financial troubles forced its closure in 2014.
When the Corcoran dissolved, its roughly 19,000-piece collection was distributed among Washington institutions, with the National Gallery of Art receiving the largest share. That transfer included Niagara by Frederic Edwin Church, a panoramic 1857 view of Horseshoe Falls that the Corcoran bought in 1876 for $12,500. The painting had already made Church famous, drawing tens of thousands of paying visitors during its one-picture debut in a darkened Manhattan gallery.
The Corcoran's name lives on through the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University, but its paintings, including Niagara, are now seen at the National Gallery of Art rather than under its own roof.
