The Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo holds the world's second-largest collection of Van Gogh works, assembled by one of the first collectors to recognize his genius. Helene Kröller-Müller began purchasing Van Gogh paintings in 1908 and eventually acquired nearly 90 paintings and over 180 drawings. She and her husband Anton donated their art collection and vast country estate to the Dutch government in 1935. The museum, designed by Belgian architect Henry van de Velde, opened in 1938 within what is now Hoge Veluwe National Park.
The collection extends well beyond Van Gogh to include Miners and early drawings alongside major works by Odilon Redon, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, and Paul Signac. The Cyclops by Redon and The Three Brides by Jan Toorop show the collection's symbolist depth. The 75-acre sculpture garden, one of Europe's largest, displays over 160 works by Rodin, Henry Moore, and Jean Dubuffet among others. Visitors can borrow free white bicycles to explore the surrounding national park.
