by Juan Gris
Juan Gris arranged bottles and a knife in this Cubist still life. The objects appear from multiple angles simultaneously, fractured into geometric planes. Gris brought a systematic, almost mathematical approach to Cubist composition.
The Spanish artist was a key figure in Synthetic Cubism alongside Picasso and Braque. His precisely structured works influenced many followers. This painting is held at the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands.
