Vincent van Gogh depicted a laborer shoveling coal in this drawing. The work reflects his early interest in the lives of workers and peasants. Van Gogh spent time in mining regions before becoming a full-time artist.
His Dutch period works often showed sympathy for common laborers and their difficult conditions. This piece is held at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands.
