The Kunsthalle Mannheim was founded in 1907 and moved into a striking new building in 2018, designed by gmp Architects. The honeycomb-shaped structure of concrete cubes replaced the 1907 Jugendstil building and added substantial exhibition space.
The collection focuses on 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century art, with strengths in German Expressionism, French Impressionism, and contemporary sculpture. Manet's Execution of Emperor Maximilian (one of several versions he painted) is among the most celebrated works. The museum also holds paintings by Cézanne, Degas, and Francis Bacon.
