The Kunsthaus Zürich opened in 1910 to house the growing collection of the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft, a local society of artists and collectors founded in 1787. Swiss architect Karl Moser designed the original Art Nouveau building, which has expanded four times since. A major extension by David Chipperfield opened in 2021, increasing gallery space by over 80%. The museum now ranks as one of Switzerland's most important art institutions, spanning from medieval religious art to contemporary installations.
Swiss art forms a foundational pillar, with major holdings of Arnold Böcklin's symbolist paintings, Ferdinand Hodler's monumental works, and the world's largest collection of objects from the Dada movement, born in Zurich in 1916. The Alberto Giacometti Foundation, established in 1965, provides the most important museum collection of Giacometti's work anywhere. Mondrian's Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow, works by Jacob van Ruisdael, and Poussin's mythological scenes show the collection's European breadth. The museum also holds the largest collection of Edvard Munch paintings outside Norway.
