Dutch Golden Age painter Jacob van Ruisdael (c.1629-1682) is considered the pre-eminent landscape painter of his era. His poetic, sometimes brooding scenes transformed landscape painting from mere topography into vehicles for emotional expression. Dramatic skies often occupy two-thirds of his canvases, while twisted oaks, watermills, and ruins create melancholic atmospheres. Unlike earlier Dutch landscapists who treated trees as decorative elements, Ruisdael made them central subjects worthy of intense study.
Ruisdael trained with his uncle Salomon van Ruysdael in Haarlem, joining the painters' guild in 1648. A trip to Germany in 1650 gave his landscapes a more heroic character, inspiring over 150 paintings of Scandinavian-style waterfalls. He produced approximately 700 paintings, 100 drawings, and several etchings. His only registered pupil was Meindert Hobbema. Ruisdael may have practiced medicine in Amsterdam alongside painting. His influence extended to English Romantics, the French Barbizon school, and American Hudson River School painters. Masterworks hang at the National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum, the Hermitage, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
