Musée Toulouse-Lautrec

The Musée Toulouse-Lautrec occupies the Palais de la Berbie, a 13th-century bishop's fortress that dominates the skyline of Toulouse-Lautrec's birthplace, Albi. The imposing brick structure, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was converted to house the artist's work after his family donated over 1,000 pieces following his death in 1901. This constitutes the world's largest public collection devoted to the painter who documented Montmartre nightlife.

The collection traces Toulouse-Lautrec's development from early portraits of family and friends through his famous Parisian subjects. All 31 lithographic posters appear here, including Moulin Rouge: La Goulue and Jane Avril, the images that revolutionized advertising design. Paintings of dancers, prostitutes, and cabaret performers reveal his empathetic eye for marginalized figures. A top floor shows works by contemporaries including Bonnard, Vuillard, and Matisse. French gardens designed by André Le Nôtre offer river views.
