Museo Larco opened in Lima on July 28, 1926, inside an 18th-century vice-royal building in the Pueblo Libre district. It is a privately owned collection spanning roughly 5,000 years of Peruvian history, drawing from coastal cultures like the Cupisnique, Mochica, and Chimú, the central coast's Lima and Chancay peoples, and highland traditions including the Chavín, Huari, and Inca.
Among its holdings is the Moche Portrait Vessel, a ceramic work by Moche potters known for rendering individual faces with striking realism rather than idealized features. The museum also holds the largest collection of pre-Columbian jewelry and ceramics in Peru, plus a well-known gallery of erotic pottery kept separate from the main exhibition halls.
A garden courtyard and on-site cafe surround the original colonial building, and a sister institution, the Pre-Columbian Art Museum in Cusco, extends the Larco family's collection beyond Lima.
