SFMOMA, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, was founded in 1935 as the first West Coast museum devoted solely to modern art. Its current building, designed by Mario Botta, opened in 1995, and a 2016 expansion by Snøhetta doubled the gallery space.
The museum's holdings exceed 33,000 works. Its best-known painting is Henri Matisse's Femme au chapeau (Woman with a Hat) (1905), a founding work of Fauvism. Diego Rivera's The Flower Carrier was part of the collection's original gift.
Frida Kahlo's Frieda and Diego Rivera, a wedding portrait of Kahlo and Rivera, is also part of the collection. SFMOMA additionally holds the Fisher Collection, roughly 1,100 contemporary works on long-term loan from Doris and Donald Fisher.
