Toledo Cathedral (Catedral Primada de Toledo) is one of Spain's greatest Gothic cathedrals, begun in 1226 under Ferdinand III and not completed until 1493. The cathedral serves as the seat of the Primate of Spain and dominates the Toledo skyline.
The sacristy functions as a painting gallery, with works by El Greco, Goya, Raphael, Titian, and Velázquez. El Greco's Disrobing of Christ (El Expolio, 1577-1579) hangs in the sacristy and remains one of his most powerful paintings. The Transparente, a Baroque altarpiece pierced by a skylight, is an 18th-century engineering marvel that floods the dark interior with light.
