Dutch artist Adriaen van Ostade painted this warm interior scene around 1647, showing a peasant family gathered in their cottage. A mother tends to a child while other family members go about daily tasks in the humble space. Van Ostade's golden light filtering through a window transforms the modest setting into something tender and dignified.
The painting exemplifies Dutch Golden Age genre painting at its most sympathetic. Unlike earlier depictions of peasants as crude or comic, van Ostade presents his subjects with affection and understanding. Now at the Louvre Museum in Paris, this work shows the artist's mature style at its finest.
