Édouard Manet painted this Jeanne Duval, the longtime mistress of poet Charles Baudelaire, reclining in an elaborate white dress. The woman of Haitian descent had inspired Baudelaire's most sensuous poetry.
Manet and Baudelaire were close friends who shared ideas about modern art and literature. By the time of this portrait, Duval was ill and aging, though Manet captures her with dignity. The painting resides at the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts.
