by Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch produced this Jurisprudence as one of several university hall decorations in Oslo. The work addresses the theme of law and justice through Munch's distinctive visual language, featuring elongated figures and intense colors.
Munch won a competition to decorate the University of Oslo's Aula in 1909, a controversial commission that sparked public debate. His Expressionist style was seen by some as too modern for a public building. The paintings, installed in 1916, transformed the hall into a dramatic artistic statement. This work resides at the National Gallery in Oslo.
