by Giovanni Bellini, 1459
Giovanni Bellini painted The Agony in the Garden around 1459, depicting Christ praying on the Mount of Olives while his disciples sleep. The dawn landscape glows with subtle color as soldiers approach in the distance.
Bellini's brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna painted the same subject around the same time, allowing comparison of their different approaches. Bellini's version emphasizes atmospheric light over Mantegna's harder forms. This tempera painting hangs at the National Gallery in London.
