Hieronymus Bosch completed this scene of Christ carrying the cross surrounded by grotesque tormentors. The faces of Christ's persecutors are distorted into nightmarish masks of cruelty, contrasting with Christ's serene acceptance.
Bosch's unique vision combines religious devotion with disturbing fantasy. His work remains mysterious and powerful. It hangs at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
