Jan Steen portrayed Baker Oostwaert and his wife in this domestic portrait. The painting shows the couple with the attributes of their trade, characteristic of Dutch Golden Age portraiture that celebrated middle-class prosperity.
Steen was known for humorous genre scenes but also painted portraits. This work is at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
