by Jan Steen
Jan Steen was one of the Dutch Golden Age's most prolific painters of domestic scenes, and this work shows his characteristic interest in mealtime subjects. Steen created numerous paintings depicting families gathered around tables, from humble peasant dinners to prayers before eating. His genre scenes often carried moral undertones about temperance and domestic virtue.
Steen lived most of his life in Leiden and Haarlem, supplementing his income as a painter by running taverns. This background gave him firsthand knowledge of the social dynamics he depicted. His household scenes became so famous for their chaotic energy that the Dutch phrase "a Jan Steen household" still describes a messy home.
This painting hangs at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. While the Uffizi is best known for Italian Renaissance works, it holds a small but notable collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings acquired by the Medici family over centuries of collecting.
