Jean-François Millet composed this portrait of Javain, the Mayor of Cherbourg, early in his career before he developed the peasant subjects that would make him famous. Born in Normandy near the sea, Millet first trained as a portrait painter and received commissions from local notables. These early works show his solid academic foundation.
Millet would later move to Barbizon and become one of the founders of that influential school, creating iconic images of rural labor like "The Gleaners" and "The Angelus." But his early portraits demonstrate the technical skill that underlaid his later, more radical work depicting peasant life with dignity and monumentality.
This portrait hangs at the Musée Thomas-Henry in Cherbourg, which holds a significant collection of Millet's early work from his Norman period before his move to Paris and Barbizon.
